I enjoyed the book, even with all the tormented happenings between the two lovers. I even grew very much fond of them. In the seccond half of the book, I became almost obsessed with their love story as well as upset with the almost persistent love bad-luck and often misunderstandings appreciating in the same time that bad-luck in the XIX th century was more romantic than fulfilled passionate love stories. All in all, I hated the ending. He should have not killed Octave. I am not even acceptingThis is Stendhal's highly misunderstood first novel. The supposed "pretext" of the novel is to present a protagonist, Octave, in love with (but unaware of his own feelings) his cousin, Armance, but suffering from a secret curse, never revealed in the text (hint: impotence). In 1827, such things are not spoken of, but previously, recent unpublished by highly circulated (among the upper classes) novels depicted similar "secret" problems.
