Representaion Toward Books Crazy All the Time: On The Psych Ward of Bellevue Hospital

At first this book struck me as way too voyeuristic and "I'm the wise, sane, totally awesome dude running the show and of course I'm witty and everything goes well due to my great supervising."

The book covers a year in the life of interns at Bellevue hospital as told by the chief psychologist. Apparently the "characters" are composites so their identities can't be easily traced, but it was hard to tell, especially this being a book published before HIPAA.

I like reading books about mental illness because they help me put that aspect of my life into context. I don't like it when books focus on or exaggerate the most severe manifestations of mental illness just for show. It seemed like this book was doing that for the first few chapters, but it improved over time. I understand you gotta sell books, but mental patients are indeed human beings and deserve to be treated with respect instead of some kind of side show.

Anyway, the book got better even though the author comes across as an over privileged, paternalistic douche at times.

Write-Up Out Of Books Crazy All the Time: On The Psych Ward of Bellevue Hospital
down to earth. fun and informational. loved it!

Dr. Covan is chief psychologist at Bellevue Hospital in New York (or was at the time of this book's publication) and with help from Carol Kahn, he has written a highly entertaining account of one year's crop of interns and some of the patients they encounter and try to help. There is Kitty, whose paranoid schizophrenic patient spins tales of having slept with six presidents of the United States. This is perhaps not as challenging as Kitty's marriage, in which her husband expects her to come home

Oh boy was it. Hard to put down if you like all the psych stories.

Makes justice to its name.

Really interesting insight into work in a psychiatric hospital setting.

Crazy All the Time is chilling, deeply psychological in nature and most of all, an alarming cry for help from a system perhaps too outdated to match modern humanity.

Interesting tales from the halls of the Bellevue Psych ward. I am filled with admiration for the people who can think quickly on their feet, maintain their own emotions, and respond appropriately to truly bizarre behaviors. I also pity the chronically mentally ill, who have less of a life than the severely physically disabled, who at least can relate to their environment.
