Representaion To Books Becoming the Villainess
"In this splendidly entertaining debut, Jeannine Hall Gailey offers us a world both familiar and magical-filled with fairytale and mythology characters that are our own bedfellows-we wake up with Philomel and argue with Ophelia while half-listening to a Snow Queen, amidst Spy Girls, Amazons and Mongolian Cows. The wild and seductive energy in this collection never lets one put the book down. (In fact, any one who opens the collection in the bookstore and reads such poems as The Conversation and Job Requirements: A Supervillain's Advice will want to buy the book!) For her delivery is heart-breaking and refreshing, so the poems seduce us with the sadness, glory and entertainment of our very own days. Propelled by Jeannine Hall Gailey's alert, sensuous, and musical gifts, the mythology becomes all our own." -Ilya Kaminsky, author of the award-winning Dancing in Odessa

This was great! New, fresh, taking faerie-tale roles to new dimensions. If you enjoy the work of Amanda Lovelace, you will appreciate this collection! SO glad I bought it!A delightfully transcendent piece of feminist literature. Gailey's poetry is sublime, and her women suitably wicked in their (predestined, predetermined?) roles. Her witty social commentary is a treasure, one which I'm sure I'll revisit many times in the future. A definite must-read.
I didn't love it as much as Unexplained Fevers but...there are some cool associations between comic book and fairy tale heroines that I found creatively inspiring and entertaining. I'll re-read it, and that's the mark of a good book, right?

An interesting collection of stories about the representation of women in stories and media. It covers a variety of issues, references a variety of stories, and manages to be consistently interesting. While I don't find the poems themselves particularly amazing, the content is great.
I love re-tellings of myths, and this one twists and turns and brings them forward into time, then tosses them back where they belong again.Smart, edgy -- poetry with teeth, Atwood-style.
Fantastic collection. All of the poems really work with each other, and it's well worth the read. The language is straightforward and not overly complicated, but that seems to sharpen the imagery. I flew through this on a first read, but I could see returning to certain poems again and again.
My expectations were set high. And in the first two parts (of five in total), those expectations were not entirely met with. But boy oh boy, the Persephone references werea hit, as well as the metafictional commentary on black/white comic book stories (or their stereotypical characters).A definite recommendation for people interested in poetry and/or popular culture.
