Ilustration Toward Books That Affair Next Door (Mr. Gryce #8)
First published in 1897, That Affair Next Door is another fascinating study in human motivations intertwined with bits and pieces of circumstantial evidence that at first make very little sense. True to Green’s style, she calls up and explains each motivation, each piece of evidence with mathematical precision until the mystery unravels and the perpetrator is punished in a most fitting fashion.

A total enjoyment! Amazing writer, in my opinion. I plan to read Anna Katharine Green's first book, The Leavenworth Case, next. By the way, I am reading these books on my iPhone. I hope to get a Nook (Barnes and Noble reader, coming out soon) for Christmas. This was one of my famous Kindle freebies. Obviously, the cover is the standard, you got it for free so don't complain, cover. No rating required. I just consider it the classic, encyclopedia variety; clean & eye catching by its own right.I loved this book. Miss Butterworth, the single, older lady with a keen eye for detail, is the perfect behind the radar star. Mr. Gryce, the crotchety old detective you can't help but like, is her perfect partner. This book is another late 1800's miracle.
While the writing and the character development were top- notch, the solution to the mystery left much to be desired, dependent as it was on some rather wild coincidences. Still, having been written even before Sherlock Holmes made his debut, I suppose on has to make allowances. Meeting the excellent Miss Amelia Butterworth does make up for a lot.

Yawn. This book is alright if you like Victorian melodrama featuring vengeful brides and implausible plot twists (the climactic chapters were hilariously overwrought), but it had the nutritional value of a shrimp cracker, and Chesterton and Sayers wrote far superior detective stories.
Anna Katherine Green is an author that I didn't discover until I received my Kindle and was looking for freebies to read. She began writing in 1878 and died in 1935. I don't know how I had missed her books before but I'm so glad I found them! I find her referred to as "The mother of the detective novel" so I'm thrilled that so many of her books are available as Kindle freebies. If I ever see them in hardback, they'll be going on my shelves! That Affair Next Door features a spinster sleuth long
I think its wonderful when the library of Congress releases classic novels that most people might not get a chance to read. This classic mystery published in 1897 is remarkable and that the protagonist of the story is an elderly woman named Miss Butterworth is even more remarkable. This story has all the classic twist and turns that make for a wonderful story. Of course when reading any classic you must take into consideration the time period in which the work was written. I find the language
