Possessed: The Secret of Myslotch: A Gothic Novel
You might become older than you are if you were one of Maya Okholowska’s furniture people. Alice's symbiotics along for the sea, now the wallpaper. Maybe you're born today, just now, when her hand is out. I started looking for when everyone Maya knew was less. She is one of those rich bitches. Not really, they have no money. Rob from their esteem to feed the stuck-up. Man, her circle were hard to read about. Where did the power come from, where did it have left to go? Are people truly willing to put up with that kind of bullshit just because a girl is pretty? (They were all as bad as she is.)
Maybe her betrothed, that bloated secretary floating in his haunted grave, will steal candy from death’s baby. She could have clothes to dress herself. He is plotting our gothic ghost story, a bona fide nightmare of heeding an old lunatic. Does the will he just die already prince sit on a throne of priceless buried treasure? The fiance was pretty damned dumb. If he had bothered to read any gothic mysteries it would have been obvious that at one point the old prince knocked up the help and then turned his puritanical grossness into visiting misery. That’s like their bread and their butter. Throw in a murder, revenge, long memory. There has to be a decrepit servant who forgets he isn’t his master’s loyal dog. (I wouldn’t mind checking out the curiosity castle myself. Maybe it is has stuffed animal kingdom to look alive when you can’t find the pots the ancients pissed in. I’ve liked these kinds of museums best. Sure, Disney likes their paintings to follow you with their eyes, but c’mon, those old soviet bath tubs in the Lightner museum were cool.) Dollar eyes Kholawitski with the ring on one candy arm and the other her necklace. I’m haunted by a “What does that say about me?” is all there is in the living more than I am in the long memory. The slobbering prince insists his insanity and his title and I guess it is just as depressing all these means work for all these shitty people to tie all these other people down. It does make it creepy, only the scales tipped more for dull shittiness than goosebumps like soviet bath tubs.
Maya’s tennis coach Walchak could write his ransom note out of articles of other, more famous tennis players. What does that say about them? He is the first to measure their similarity. Honestly, you could go on any imdb page for any actor (try it! Look up the first actor you think of) and they will have at the very least one or two “Looks just like….” discussion topic. We must all have a double walking the Earth should any of us want to get away with murder. Walchak sees it almost right off the tennis racket that Maya has his peculiar way of sleeping as if they had been slung, head at angle with feet. But still, once everyone started to mention the resemblance, especially to these two who think so much about what everyone thinks of them, wasn’t it going to flatter them into submission?
Walchak’s blue lips repulse Maya out of her willed rapture. I got really freaking sick of Maya and Walchak’s back and forth. What does it say about me? we are just alike, I love me so I should love him, but if I’m like him…. Ego minus the empathy. Still, I was enjoying ‘Possessed’ a lot, like a bit tongue macabre, until Maya runs away to Warsaw and Walchak follows. Her job (prostitutes who don’t screw? I don’t believe they weren’t doing the nasty with the Russian lady’s businessmen) of making an old fart’s niece jealous (she should have eaten all of the marchioness’ favorite foods and moaned “Sooooooo gooooooood!”) was nicely weird but I didn’t care that much about it. I cared less about any of the rich assholes Maya knew. Her bland boyfriend who she COULD be with but isn’t. Walchak’s nice girl who he COULD love but doesn’t. Too much, Gombrowicz! Insipid romances ruin gothic mysteries a lot (authenticism?) but theirs isn’t even like those. It it just depressing (I don’t want it to be true that everybody just wants everybody else to bolster their egos) and repetitive as fuck. I almost forgot that the professor dude was playing raging bull with a ghostly white cloth hanging from a hook in the Old Kitchen. I guess I really liked this in the beginning when I thought something interesting was going to happen. Like if Scooby Doo was good with all of it's fake ghosts because the dog was scared (Scooby Doo sucks, bad example). You know how Stephen King was good at the set up and then it was dullsville by the end? I was checked out by the time the famous psychic shows up to explain everything. I think this would have been better if suggestion’s power of evil was the possession. The creepiest part was when Walchak brutalizes the squirrel because a laughing Maya tells him to. She does her (why did anyone hang around her?!) schtick of laughing and playing it off as if she had meant something else when he complies. Walchak does his sooo Walchak of I have a hot athlete’s body and if I left town I could have a new slate unthinking brutality. The professor does his in the name of academia! Poland! Posterity posterior! routine and he totally deserved old world nastiness (the rats knew better than to go there). Don’t get me started on the secretary. I know I complained a lot about John Cowper Powy's Maiden Castle but I was longing for a similar inexplicable possession that made weak spots alike to their sore spots, following you trying to rise above. Then their blue lips would have made me afraid I could be like them. (There were a lot of funny parts before there was too much Walchak and Maya will they won't they.)
Prý gotický román, no, to nevím. Prý to psal jen pro peníze. Proč ne.

What, meanwhile, had been happening at the castle- that age-old giant of brick and stone whose swamp-skirted tower loomed formidably in the gathering dusk, and within whose proud and massive walls, guardians of bygone pomps and the traces of a vanished splendour, passion, fear, and madness held sway? You might become older than you are if you were one of Maya Okholowskas furniture people.

She dropped back to let him pass. Then, from behind, she enfolded his silhouette in a look that was not hers. It seemed to have no object, and it was uncharacteristically fond. Instantly she felt herself melting, drowning, engulfed and swept away by her own gaze. A hot wave of emotion broke over her, and she pressed a hand to her throbbing heart.

Mam wrażenie, że Witold wziął pióro (a może był to ołówek atramentowy?) do ręki i napisał tę książkę za jednym posiedzeniem.
